The Complete Wheel Care Guide

Why Wheel Care Matters

Your wheels are exposed to more abuse than any other component on your car. Brake dust, road salt, gravel, tar, and UV exposure all take their toll. Proper care isn't just about aesthetics — it protects your investment.

Weekly Maintenance

Basic Cleaning

1. Rinse thoroughly with water to remove loose dirt and brake dust

2. Apply a pH-neutral wheel cleaner — never use acidic cleaners on forged wheels

3. Agitate with a soft-bristle brush — use dedicated wheel brushes, never wire brushes

4. Clean the barrel with a long-reach barrel brush

5. Rinse again and dry with a clean microfiber towel

What NOT to Use

  • Automatic car wash wheel brushes (too abrasive)
  • Acidic or highly alkaline cleaners
  • Pressure washers at close range (stay 30cm+ away)
  • Steel wool or abrasive pads

Monthly Protection

Apply a wheel-specific sealant or ceramic coating monthly. A good sealant makes weekly cleaning significantly easier by preventing brake dust from bonding to the surface.

Seasonal Care

Winter Preparation

  • Consider a dedicated set of winter wheels
  • Apply extra sealant before winter starts
  • Wash wheels more frequently (weekly minimum)
  • Rinse the wheel barrels to remove salt buildup

Post-Winter

  • Deep clean all wheel surfaces
  • Inspect for any damage or corrosion
  • Reapply sealant or ceramic coating
  • Check torque on all lug nuts

Damage Prevention

  • Curb rash: Be mindful when parallel parking
  • Impact damage: Avoid potholes. If you hit one hard, have the wheel inspected
  • Chemical damage: Clean bird droppings and tree sap promptly
  • Heat cycles: Allow brakes to cool before washing after hard driving

Professional Refinishing

  • Minor scratches: Can often be polished out
  • Curb rash: Professional refinishing can restore the original finish
  • Bends: Forged wheels can often be straightened by specialists
  • Cracks: Rare in forged wheels, but if it happens, replacement is recommended
